WASHINGTON June 8, 2011 – The Senate Committee on the Judiciary confirmed Donald Verrilli, Jr. as Solicitor General on Monday.

Before being nominated for the post Verrilli worked as one of Viacom’s lead attorneys in the suit against YouTube in 2007. He also represented the Recording Industry Association of America in the Supreme Court when the group sued the file sharing service Grokster in 2005.

The Solicitor General defends the U.S. before the Supreme Court and files amicus briefs on behalf of the nation in cases where the government sees significant legal issues.

Verrilli received support from eight previous Solicitors’ General including Charles Fried, Kenneth Starr and Drew Days.
