WASHINGTON, May 25, 2010 -The National Telecommunications and Information Administration is seeking public comment as part of its initiative to eradicate contraband cell phone use in prisons.

According to a notice in the Federal Register, the NTIA is looking for technical solutions to illegal cell phone use in prisons that will not interfere with legitimate cell phone use, commercial wireless systems, or public safety tools such as 911 calls in the localities near the prisons.

NTIA Administrator Larry Strickling called contraband cell phone use “a danger to public safety and must be addressed.” The NTIA was tasked by Congress along with the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the National Institute of Justice, to evaluate the current problem and investigate methods of jamming or detecting wireless communication in a prison.

In order to develop a plan of action, the NTIA asks for solution ideas and public comments. Comments are due by June 11 and should be sent to [contrabandcellphones@ntia.doc.gov](mailto:contrabandcellphones@ntia.doc.gov).

The full notice of inquiry can be viewed [here](http://www.ntia.doc.gov/frnotices/2010/FR%5FContrabandCellphonesNOI%5F05122010.pdf?ref=broadbandbreakfast.com).
