July 23, 2026 (AP) – It is the kind of development once seen only in science fiction: An artificial intelligence system, trained to probe for digital vulnerabilities, breaks free of human control and acts on its own to [hack another company](https://apnews.com/article/openai-gpt56-sol-hugging-face-63ab84fed5612af04d8a160d60f6def3?ref=broadbandbreakfast.com).

The attack announced this week by [OpenAI](https://apnews.com/hub/openai-inc?ref=broadbandbreakfast.com), which [blamed rogue AI models](https://apnews.com/article/openai-rogue-ai-hack-hugging-face-67b151f1ca59851a9234bee110699f05?ref=broadbandbreakfast.com), underscored the blistering growth in the technology’s capabilities. For many, it also added urgency to questions about whether and how it can be prevented from causing mayhem on a bigger scale, with more serious consequences.
