WASHINGTON, July 30, 2010 – San Francisco area public officials have announced that they would enter into a partnership with Motorola to construct a 700 MegaHerz LTE system – one of 21 in the country granted the right to do so by the FCC. The first phase of the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications System (BayRICS) will be deployed this year, and will cover the San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale areas. It is expected to be operational by 2011, and will deploy 330 Motorola modems across 10 sites.

Laura Phillips, general manager of the Bay Area UASI, said the project represents a first step in realizing the BayRICS vision for a unified, state-of-the-art, mission critical voice and broadband multimedia network.” She added, “Combining a public-safety-hardened LTE overlay network with our Project 25 voice and data networks, we have the opportunity to equip our first responders with the advanced communications tools they need to better protect themselves and our communities.”
