WASHINGTON, Wednesday, September 7, 2011 – The internet technology news and events service BroadbandBreakfast.com will hold its final monthly event in the Intellectual Property Breakfast Club on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with a keynote presentation by Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif.
The topic of discussion at the September 13 event, “Video Streaming on Digital Devices: Will Broadband Clash with Copyright” will be the perfect capstone to the year-long breakfast series.
In addition to Lofgren’s keynote, the discussion will include top panelists from the telecommunications and intellectual property fields to debate recent controversies considering the copyright infringement charges over broadband video streaming.

Final Monthly Event in Year-Long Series
With this final monthly intellectual property event, BroadbandBreakfast.com is returning to its roots in focusing on broadband infrastructure, universal broadband service, the National Broadband Plan and wireless services. In addition to the monthly Broadband Breakfast Club on the THIRD Tuesday of the month, BroadbandBreakfast.com plans to host special events on intellectual property in the future.
The Intellectual Property Breakfast Club launched in September 2010 with an event on the Obama Administration’s Intellectual Property Czar. The series considered a many issues, and always strove to include a diverse balance of fresh perspectives from the content industry, the technology industry, and the broadband industry.
Topics included internet service provider liability, the French copyright authority HADOPI, the Chinese Intellectual Propety Attache, a serious and intense debate about patent reform, quantifying the costs of global piracy, and a performance right for broadcasting. (See below for a complete list.)

Broadband is changing the way we watch TV. Indeed, many people aren’t watching “TV” — we are watching Netflix, Hulu and other premium content on Androids, iPads, and Slingboxes that are connected over Wi-Fi or mobile connections.
But will copyright preclude what broadband enables? A recent legal spat between Time Warner Cable and Viacom, over an iPad app streaming video content, may be a harbinger of troubles to come.
The September 2011 Intellectual Property Breakfast Club features Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif. as the keynote speaker. Ms. Lofgren has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1995, representing the 16th District of California, which is based in San Jose, the “Capital of Silicon Valley”. Rep. Lofgren is one of the top members of the House involved in high-tech issues. She is well known in high tech policy circles for her successful bipartisan efforts to decontrol encryption technology. She also sits on the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet and is well regarded for her work on patent reform, copyright, digital rights, net neutrality, and high skilled immigration. She is the Chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation, and is also a member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and the Committee on House Administration.

Paul Glist — Partner and Co-Chair of the Communications, Media & Information Technology Practice at Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP, concentrates in cable, communications, media, privacy and security, and information technology. Glist has been involved in many groundbreaking efforts in telecommunications and cable law and has helped develop the legislation, regulation and case law shaping these industries
Victoria F. Phillips — Professor, Washington College of Law, American University. Professor Phillips teaches communications and intellectual property law and is the Director of the Glushko-Samuelson Intellectual Property Law Clinic. She also helped found and is a Faculty Director of the law school’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property (PIJIP). Previously, she was Chief of the Legal Branch of the Mass Media Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission and counsel in the Office of General Counsel.
Sanjay Udani — Executive Director, Internet and Technology Policy, Verizon. Prior to assuming his current position he was a Principal MTS in Verizon’s Technology organization where he led many aspects of Verizon’s FiOS broadband deployment including the architecture for Internet data service, video on demand, home networking, network policy management, content delivery networks, and the next generation IPTV initiative. Sanjay is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he has been teaching graduate telecommunications courses for over a decade.
