Canada, much like the United States, suffers from a digital divide. Currently, 95 percent of Canadian households have access to broadband internet at speeds of 50 Megabits per second (Mbps) down and 10 Mbps up, the standard for “broadband” used by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. In the U.S., 96 percent of households have access to broadband at 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up, the threshold for “broadband” set by the Federal Communications Commission. This Broadband Breakfast Live Online session will review Canada’s broadband progress, including how the country plans to close its digital divide. What funding programs or subsidies are currently in place to accelerate broadband deployment in Canada? How is Canada measuring progress toward universal broadband access? What lessons can Canada and the U.S. learn from each other?
