More than a third of China’s citizens use the internet, according to a new report in Xinhua, China’s official news service.

There are now 457 million internet users in China, the China Internet Network Information Center announced Wednesday. That’s an increase of 73.3 million from a year earlier.

The center said that the average time spent online is 2.61 hours a day.

The CNNIC said that China’s improved internet infrastructure has also helped more of its rural citizens to get online. About 125 million of them are now online, up almost 17 percent from a year ago.

“The traditional sectors have underpinned Internet growth over the past 10 years, and in the next 10 years the Internet will feed the traditional sectors,” predicted Lu Benfu, an expert on the Internet economy at the School of Management, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Many of the users access the internet through their mobile phones and laptops, according to the report.
