WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2026 — Nevada is redirecting $52 million originally intended to expand rural broadband after state officials determined a contractor would not finish planned connections in time to meet a federal spending deadline.
The money came from pandemic-era federal relief funding that Nevada had set aside for broadband deployment. The state must spend the funds by Dec. 31, 2026, and officials determined the broadband project in Pahrump could not meet that deadline.
The Communications Act of 1934 recognized two kinds of regulated companies, broadcasters and common carriers. Cable fit in neither.
The bill would block local approvals and state permits for new data centers and related energy infrastructure from July 2027.
The pandemic relief money will instead go to support mental health care in jails, food‑insecurity programs, and multifamily housing efforts
The offer arrived a day after Anthropic announced that it will commit 5% of its shares to a new 'public benefit' fund
