USPTO Names Teresa Stanek Rea As Deputy Director
WASHINGTON, February 18, 2010 — U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday appointed biotech and pharma lawyer Teresa Stanek Rea as deputy director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

WASHINGTON, February 18, 2010 — U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday appointed biotech and pharma lawyer Teresa Stanek Rea as deputy director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
“Teresa has an impressive track record of success across several disciplines and will be a tremendous asset to the USPTO,” Locke said in a press statement. “Her leadership will be instrumental in the USPTO’s efforts to foster economic growth and job creation by reducing the backlog of patent applications, enhancing patent and trademark quality, and becoming more efficient.”
Rea comes to the leadership ranks of the USPTO from the law firm of Crowell & Moring in Washington, DC.
She succeeds Sharon Barner, who resigned In December.
The Legal Times quoted an anonymous friend who said that Barner had wanted to move back to Chicago, where her three children are in junior high and high school.
In a statement on her service, the USPTO noted Barner’s achievements:
“Among her many accomplishments is the development of the 2010-2015 USPTO Strategic Plan, which is designed to strengthen the capacity of the USPTO, reduce patent processing times and improve patent quality.
In the international arena, Barner led 15 foreign missions to countries including Brazil, China, India, Mexico and Russia. During her travel, Barner met with representatives of government, academia and industry in order to raise awareness of the importance of intellectual property (IP) and its critical role in economic, social and cultural development.”
